The Coveted Crown
After Steve Harvey crowned Miss Columbia as ‘Miss Universe’ last week while reading the wrong ballot, the world has taken a keener interest in beauty pageants… and so have we! While some may think that all it takes to win the coveted crown is a gorgeous smile and angelic face, there are in fact grueling aspects that we don’t get to see behind the scenes that aren’t glamorous at all.
What is stunning though, are the elegant crowns that contestants vie for. The crown symbolizes power, fame, attention and a feeling of royalty – something no pageant is complete without. Take a look at our top favourite crowns to ever be awarded for national beauty pageants.
Made from white gold and containing 2357 diamonds and 14 rare pearls (the foremost of which is a whopping 19mm), this crown costs a whopping 1 million US dollars! This masterpiece is rumored to be the most expensive in the world.
What’s interesting to note about the Miss Spain crown is that it is inspired by the movie Star Wars! This elaborate crown is decked with sapphires, rubies, pearls and more than 2000 diamonds – all set in platinum. Truly worth dying for!
This one of a kind creation is totally 100% green! Yes, this crown was designed by Diamond Nexus Labs and inspired by the Statue of Liberty. It is set with 1936 gems all made in a laboratory, set in platinum and white gold with intricate detailing.
What we love most about this are the dangling diamonds at the base. Made with tin and an alloy of platinum, this crown is studded with crystals and pearls – inspired by the tropical orchids.
MISS SOUTH AFRICA
Rather than opting for Swarovski crystals, Miss South Africa’s crown features more turquoise and royal blue manufactured by Jack Friedman. Chunkier than the ordinary daintier crowns, this one features a thick floral band at the base and diamond patterns above.
MISS UNIVERSE 2015
Miss Philippines (in blue) is re-crowned as Miss Universe 2015 after Miss Columbia – ending her reign as Miss Universe in a mere 55 seconds. The majestic crown was manufactured by a Czech Republic Company “Diamond International” and contains 311 diamonds, 5 Topaz stones, 198 pieces of blue sapphire, 33 pieces of crystal, and gold. It was designed to emulate the Manhattan skyline.
A crown is a symbol of the culture of a country and is designed to showcase what the country stands for as well as the responsibility that the wearer must take on.
